What is Delphi?

Borland Delphi is arguably the world's best Windows development tool. Delphi is flexible, powerful, and easy to use.

Delphi can be used to create any type of application, but it is especially good for developing database applications.  Out of the box, Delphi can access and manipulate virtually any database management system (DBMS), including most popular file-based desktop databases (like Microsoft Access, FoxPro, dBase, and Paradox) and server-based databases (like Oracle, InterBase, DB2, SQL Server, Informix, and Sybase).  Delphi also supports the Microsoft ODBC (Open DataBase Connectivity) and ADO (ActiveX Data Objects) standards, and can hit data stored in any of such datasource that you have a suitable driver for.

Delphi also supports all popular application architectures, including stand-alone, LAN-based, Client-Server, Distributed (COM and CORBA), and Internet Server.

For the database application developer, Delphi is truly the one tool that can do it all!

Delphi 3rd-Party Tool Support
Delphi is extendable through the addition of 3rd-Party visual component libraries (VCLs).  These VCLs are to Delphi as ActiveX controls (OCXs) are to Visual Basic. You purchase specialized components and install them into the IDE.  You can then use them like as you would the standard components, dragging and dropping them onto forms, setting properties, and coding event handlers.  The difference between VCLs and OCXs is that the VCL components compile directly into the EXE.  OCXs must be distributed with your EXE and properly registered on the end-user's computer, a process that opens the door for versioning or registry problems if the setup program does not correctly handle the OCXs.  Incidentally, Delphi supports OCXs too, so a Delphi application can use both VCLs and OCXs.  Visual Basic only supports OCXs.

Some 3rd-Party VCLs provide the developer with instant productivity by encapsulating some difficult or otherwise time-consuming task into components.  The developer does not have to 're-invent the wheel' to add this functionality to his application; you simply purchase the VCL and add it to your Delphi IDE.  Examples of this type of VCL that I use are
DynaZIP (data-compression VCL) and LightLib Images (image acquisition/manipulation).

Some 3rd-Party VCLs provide improved versions of standard data-aware components.
DBPower and InfoPower are two VCLs of this type that I use.

Some 3rd-Party VCLs are simply GUI (Graphical User Interface) enhancing components, like floating/dockable toolbars and graphically-enhanced menus.  Their function is to make the application's interface more flashy or functional.
ToolBar97 and CoolMenus Pro are two VCLs of this type that I use.

Here is a list of the Delphi 3rd-Party VCL (Visual Component Library) add-ins that I am licensed to use:
InfoPower by Woll2Woll (award-winning enhanced data-aware controls)
Apollo by Luxent (BDE replacement for apps that use FoxPro, Clipper, and dBase files)
DBPower by Luxent (enhanced data-aware controls optimized for use with Apollo)
ReportPrinter by Nevrona Designs (creates reports in code, compiles them into app)
LightLib Images by DFL (data-aware image aquisition and manipulation component)
Titan Access by Regatta Systems (BDE replacement for apps that use Access databases)
DynaZIP by Inner Media (PKzip compatible Zip and UnZip components)
CoolMenus Pro by CoolDev (Graphical menu-enhancing components)
ToolBar97 by Jordan Russell (Floating/dockable toolbar components)

Delphi Credentials
I have been formally trained in Delphi by the DSW Group, Atlanta GA.  I possess the following Delphi certificates:

I have supplemented this formal training with practical experience by using Delphi to develop Desktop, Client-Server, and Intranet database applications.  I have also used Delphi to develop several shareware applications, which you can download here.
